Teaser for Disney Short "Feast"

I'm a sucker for both adorable puppies and delicious food (as you well know), so I'm ready to be delighted by Disney's latest short, Feast, about a puppy's food-slash-life journey. They recently released this teaser for it, which only confirms my pre-delight:



The animation style is really rich and enjoyable, as well. As /Film points out, it's reminiscent of 2012's Paperman but with color and a puppy!

Enough dog puns? Look at this adorable pup in costume (what costume is it? Not sure. Like, he got into a triangular jack-o-lantern and also is a sweater?). Who wouldn't want to squeeze that little pup? What a cutie. I can't wait to watch it when it comes out along with Big Hero 6 this November!

Glen Keane's "Duet" is a wonderful short film

I love a good short film - and I love a good short animated film even more. This short, Duet, from legendary Disney animator Glen Keane (think: Ariel, Tarzan - which you can really see in the male character - Pocahontas, Aladdin, Rapunzel) is simple and beautiful. If you're not an animation lover, you'll enjoy the story and the music. If you are an animation lover, you will see why this guy is a master of the art:



So pure and lovely. And, needless to say, the hand-drawn quality is so refreshing.

Here's a synopsis (though why do you really need one of a short? I have no idea):

Animated in its entirety and directed by Glen Keane (former Disney animator and creator of such beloved characters as Ariel, Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tarzan and Rapunzel), DUET tells the story of Mia and Tosh and how their individual paths in life weave together to create an inspired duet. The unique, interactive nature of the story allows the viewer to seamlessly follow the journey of either of the two characters from birth to adulthood.

Puppies Rolling Down a Hill

My favorites have to be the dog who's too fat to properly roll and the golden retriever puppies who refuse to let go of their toys while they're rolling. Ah, to be young and also a dog!

So far, I'm hitting it out of the park, holiday nails-wise, but the question was, "What next?" By this time, all the holiday movies (and, inexplicably, Harry Potter, which I'm not arguing with I just thought it was a random but appreciated choice) have been playing on a loop for a few weeks now, so I thought back through them and figured, "You know what? I could probably do Snoopy and that sad Christmas tree Charlie brown makes before his friends - and I use the term friends pretty loosely because they're super mean to him a lot - fix it up using magic fast-hands." So I did! Dotting tool for the snow, shaping Snoopy's head and body, and ornament for the tree. Regular nail brush for the French tips-style snow. Tiny nail brush for Snoopy's features, legs, tail, hat, Christmas tree and leaves, and the little white dot on the ornament and Snoopy's nose to make them look shiny.

Now here's where you're totally justified in asking me how long it took: two-thirds of a football game, which is, more precisely, a little over two hours. By far my most ambitious nails, and I'm super proud of them. They look really, super great! They give off a feeling of Christmas tinged with sadness and hope and cold and warmth and nostalgia. It's really a whole scene.

At least unless someone's asking me to how eat cookies. I can eat the shit out of cookies. Not literal shit, though. That'd be gross.

Just Another Reminder How Terrible Dog Breeding Is

Gawker pointed out this concise post called, "100 Years of Breed 'Improvement'" on a Dog Behavior Science blog. Comparing photos of eight breeds from 1915 to today, the blog runs down the list of hereditary health ailments that have been bred into or exaggerated through breeding these dogs. The bulldog is, of course, the worst of all (and if you look at images of bulldogs before 1915, you'll see how healthy and normal they used to be even prior to then). The fact that people still breed and sell bulldogs at all disgusts me. They're forcing a being into a life that literally can't breathe or live healthily in any real capacity. I cannot understand why any humane person would want to do that.

The One Good Thing about Fall...

...Is this adorable Siberian Husky (with a touch of Siberian Direwolf, perhaps?) frolicking in an enormous pile of leaves.



And people told me jumping into piles of leaves was immature and gross. Now I know that my only mistake was in not being born a puppy.

Ballon Dogs + Cactus + Dancing = Joy

I love this short, animated film, "Tumbleweed Tango." It's got everything you want - drama, comedy, dance, desert, and, of course, two delightful balloon dogs - one red (my favorite color) and one poodle (the best of all breeds).



I love the sound effects for the balloon animals (they really get that rubbery squish right) and (at least at first, before the pace speeds up) the animation almost has a stop-motion quality that is really fun. Great work, Hydra & humble!

Bunny shaming is the hot new trend on the Buzzfeeds.

My new sister-in-law (!! and yes, I'm going to keep doing the !!! because I just got married and it's very exciting!) can really appreciate this meme, as she has two rabbits who get into all kinds of trouble. I bet she'll be adding her own contributions soon enough!
