Garfunkel and Oates: You're Such a Loser (and that's good!)

Garfunkel and Oates had their first season finale over at IFC last week. They really went out with a bang - at least if you consider a tribute to failure and why that's ok a bang, which I do, which is why I said it.



See? Being a loser means you tried, and that's a great thing. Even when you fail a lot. A solid and adorably-animated reminder for all of us losers out there.

Bill Hader's List of 200 Essential Comedies

I just finished the book, Poking a Dead Frogs: Conversations with Today's Top Comedy Writers. He's the same guy who wrote the same book like five years ago, and the conversations are pretty much the same - in that they're interesting and fun to read, but you come out of it feeling like you haven't really learned anything. In the book, Bill Hader provides a list of his 200 "Essential" comedies to watch. You can read the full list here. The list is familiar with a few interesting differentiations, and I'll add the ones I haven't seen to my Netlflix list. I will say, I think it's really cute that he has pretty much every Coen brothers movie on there. I agree, Bill, I agree.

What do you think? Which ones haven't you seen, but want to now solely because a famous funny guy says they're legit? Because that's reason enough for me.

Ladies Can Write Marvel Movies, Too!?!

Apparently so! The co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy opening this week is Nicole Perlman. Considering this is her first produced movie, her career is starting off on a pretty high note. The enormous amount of praise the movie's been getting before its release couldn't hurt, either. Let's hope that a) the movie lives up to the hype and b) Marvel takes the hint and continues to invest in this and other writers who happen to be women. Considering that women make up a majority of moviegoers these days, I'd say it's a smart investment. You can read an interview with Nicole at THR.

Speaking of Satanists, Tina Fey's a Witch!

Or at least she is set to produce and star in a Disney witch-themed movie. Considering the last, great Disney + witches big screen pair up was Hocus Pocus (which this is not a sequel of), I'd say it's about time for a new Halloween classic. I can't wait to read more about it and then eventually watch the movie!

Comic Con: Women Who Kick Ass Panel

Well, this is refreshing. How exciting that Comic Con had another "Women Who Kick Ass" panel! EW, which hosted the panel, understandably has a great write-up on it, which included my super favorite Nicole Beharie from Sleepy Hollow, Natalie Dormer and Maisie Williams represented the Game of Thrones ladies (I suppose Gwendoline Christie and Diana Rigg were busy!), and Tatiana Maslany represented her insane string of characters from Orphan Black. That's pretty much the only panel I wish I could have seen in person, if only to be there for comments like these:

Dormer should always be the one to explain Game of Thrones to new fans: “Game of Thrones shows you all the different ways you can wield power: Whether it’s psychological, physical, sexual, dragons,” Dormer said. “I think we’d all go for the dragons if we were given the choice. But that’s the secret of the writing, that’s why it’s such a compelling show—because it shows how different people are given different weapons, physically and metaphorically, and how they use them.”

"Dear White People" Trailer!

I am going to love this movie so hard.



Dear White People has everything I want in a movie - satire, social commentary, a cast with more than one black character who gets to be a real person, solid jokes - plus two Veronica Mars actors! Can't beat that. Also, someone should let Lena Dunham know she needs another black friend because just Donald Glover isn't cutting it anymore.

So Many Movies to Be Excited About!

First off, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Maya Rudolph are all doing The Nest together. Secondly, Kristin Wiig is going to write, direct, and star in her own movie, too. How awesome is that!? I cannot wait to see these future movies that don't yet exist!

Shonda Rhimes, "My Dreams Can Suck It"

Shonda Rhimes gave a killer graduation speech at Dartmouth this year. Below is the video (the speech starts at 1:41:20 unless you just randomly want to watch all of Dartmouth graduation), and here is the speech in full text mode.



The Toni Morrison part is my favorite. If not achieving my dreams means achieving something even better and more "me" than my dreams (and involves meeting Shonda Rhimes or Toni Morrison), I will be very satisfied.

Mindy Kaling's Writing a New Book Because We Did Something Good this Year

We must have major karma rolling in to be getting books from Amy Poehler *and* Mindy Kaling this year! Mindy's new book is titled, Why Not Me? which she says has been her motto for life. Makes sense. It'll cover essentially everything that's happened since her last book, which has been, well, quite a lot. I'm stoked to read it! Also stoked to find out when it's going to be released! You can read more about the new book here (oh, look who it is, Davies again! Clearly, this is why we are friends).

"Yes Please" Let Us Read Amy Poehler's New Book!

I can't wait for Amy Poehler's book, "Yes Please" to come out in October (which I think is prime book-releasing season since it creates a buzz before Christmas and weirdos - i.e. me - only give the gift of books because they think it's more personal *and* more cheap than whatever fancy thing the recipient actually wants), but that means they forgo the wonderful summer reading season! I can totally picture myself on the beach, huddled under an umbrella saying, "Why is it so sunny and nice!? I can't read in this weather!"

Anywho - in the meantime, you can enjoy the cover art. I know I do:

It's reminiscent of her theater days, and makes me think of "yes, and" but in a more fun, "give me more" way. To that end, I wonder how much of her life and which aspects it will focus on. She's such an interesting lady. I can't wait to *Amy Poehler-style newsie boy* "Read all about it!"

New Steve Carell-Produced, Rashida Jones-Starring Comedy at TBS

Following in the successful footsteps of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, TBS has picked up Angie Tribeca, a police comedy starring Rashida Jones as a lone-wolf cop paired with a new partner. The show was created by Steve and Nancy Carell. With this, Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner's pilot, and Playing House at USA, cable has me very intrigued by its new comedy line-up.

Mindy Project Season Finale: A Study in Rom-Com Brilliance

The Mindy Project has infinitely improved this season from "show with one brilliant joke" each week to "show with great characters, brilliant jokes, and heart." And the season ended with a bang. If you haven't watched it yet, head to your On Demand or your iTunes or your whatevers and watch it. If you have watched and want to make sure you caught all of the wonderfully infused Nora Ephron rom-com references, check out this (stills) and this (gifs). Awww.

OMG I 'Love' that Mean Girls' 10th Anniversary!

Happy Birthday, Mean Girls! Networks have been replaying the movie constantly since its big day, and it still totally holds up. Don't believe me? Check out this video of teens today loving on this movie:
