Good news for offshore wind power! It passed a major regulatory hurdle, courtesy of Interior Secretary Ken Salazaar and a nine-year (nine years!) review.
Of course, not everyone's for this. Environmentalists and proponents of "pleasing views" alike* this is a very bad idea. My favorite ironic line comes from Audra Parker, president and chief executive of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound: “We will not stand by and allow our treasured public lands to be marred forever by a corporate giveaway to private industrial energy developers."
I wonder if Audra has electricity in her house right now?
If so, I wonder if she said the same thing about strip mining, mountaintop removal mining, coal mining, dirty coal plants, natural gas plants, oil mining, and nuclear power. Because - spoiler alert - wind power does a lot less damage than any of those options, and if Nantucket does not adopt a more sustainable energy source, then they're going to be staring into the eyes of a beast much scarier than wind, and much more devastating to their views.
If not, then good for Audra for going completely green and lightless. She's clearly a far better person than me.
*Here I am not referring to the Wampanoag tribe, which has the most reasonable argument of anyone against offshore wind. However, as the article states, the color, location, and orientation of the turbines can solve their problems with the project.
