"Women Against Feminism" parody Twitter is super funny/sad

"Women Against Feminism" is the exception that proves the rule of feminism gaining more mainstream acceptance. So a "Women Against Feminism" parody twitter seems very appropriate. It's super funny and you should check it out! @NoToFeminism

Jane Austen Characters "Against" Feminism

Not sure if you've heard of the anger-inducing meme going around "women against feminism." It's super frustrating, but the blog Mansfeel Park did a fun takedown using Jane Austen characters. You can read more hilariously dumb male commentary-turned-comic at their site. Here's their Jane Austen Characters Against Feminism:

Please, Adopt-A-Dude Today

Speaking of incompetent men (re: "just one of the guys"), here's a super fun satire of today's male youth:

I'd say that's about right, except weirdly enough my husband is a WAY more put-together human being than I am. I mean, he wouldn't have to Google "incompetent" just to make sure he spelled it correctly.

Jessica Williams in: "Operation Black Hair"

Jessica Williams, killing it again:

I was #blessed to be born super white, so I've never had to deal with any of these hair issues, but after watching this segment (and Chris Rock's amazing documentary, Good Hair) I am super pissed at these hairstyle regulations. Nobody should have to spend that much time on their hair unless they really want to or are getting paid gobs and gobs of cash.

Satanists, Pretty Cool People

Satanists are at it again. First, it was erecting a giant statue of Baphomet in the Oklahoma capitol. Now, they're turning the Hobby Lobby ruling on its head, saying that they should be exempt from the restrictive, anti-choice "informed consent" laws all around the country on the basis that their religion is based in scientific fact, and therefore they cannot abide by laws that are based on fear, junk, and political bias. In their words:
In response to what The Satanic Temple have dubbed a “pernicious encroachment” of “informed consent” laws regarding abortion, the organization is asserting a religious exemption from the burden of statemandated “informational” abortion materials for those who share their deeply held beliefs. According to their website, “The Satanic Temple believes that the body is inviolable subject to one’s own will alone.” Further, “we strive to make all decisions regarding personal health based on the best scientific understanding of the world, regardless of the religious or political beliefs of others.” (Full Statement)
It's a simple, powerful argument, and one the Satanists agree that any woman should make when presented with these informed consent requirements. Unlike Hobby Lobby, Satanists are starting to make a lot of sense. Who knew?

This is what happens when you take away women's rights

The Atlantic has a sobering look at the reality of the pro-life movement and the wreckage it causes.

Keep that in mind, SCOTUS.

TDS took on sexual assault on campus (i.e. the least funny thing) in pretty much the best way possible (i.e. the most funny, poignant thing):

Jessica Williams is the best.

Furious Feminist

My friend Maddie (of Amy Poehler book cover "via" from the last post fame) wrote a really great piece on #YesAllWomen at Jezebel that I forgot to direct you all to last month, so I'm telling you to read it now. I actually think, if anything, it's better to read it now if only to remind ourselves how quickly the media cools off after these kinds of horrible events. It sucks when all your righteous anger dissipates instead of actually being resolved. Keep up the great work and keep fighting the good fight, Maddie!

#YesAllWomen

ICYMI: This New Yorker article does a good job of distilling the recent, explosive #YesAllWomen hashtag. Other great articles on it at Slate, TIME, and WaPo. I'm sure I'm missing some, too, so please feel free to reply with your favorite articles or tweets.

I'm on vacation right now, and I sometimes miss the big news stories while I'm away. I'm glad I didn't miss this one. I won't go into a long discussion or a series of stories on this subject, but to address the utter banal truth of #YesAllWomen, here's a quick anecdote:

There are two ways to walk the two blocks home from the subway after work: the shorter way and the populated way. For the first several months we lived in our new apartment, he would lead us the shorter way and I would lead us the populated way. Finally, I told him, "I don't want to go that way anymore at night." "But this way is so crowded." "Yes, which means it's so safe." He had never thought of it that way. Here was an open, perceptive, feminist man who completely missed that #YesAllWomen have to choose between safety and convenience.

Also, when to and not to wear my headphones while walking alone is a nightly battle.

GOP Can't Stop Demonizing Women

TPM has a nice round-up of the latest shenanigans the GOP is throwing out there in the (as much as they deny it, very much still existing) "war on women." I just hope I don't get drafted.

How to Photograph a Cover for Powerful Women

The basic gist of photographing women for a news cover - not as heels plunging into a man's esophagus or as horrifying planetoids. A surprisingly large amount of people do not know this. Examples of good stuff here.

What if the Media Treated Male Politicians like Female Politicians?

Super amazing candidate for TX governor Wendy Davis is getting a lot of BS from the right and the media in general about her mothering skills. It's completely unfair and a waste of the voters' time.

It's also, sadly, just another example of the media and the right treating female politicians horribly compared to male politicians. To sum it up, blogger Avital Norman Nathman wrote a piece for the Frisky (re-posted by HuffPo) positing what it would be like for men to be treated the way women do in politics. It's a solid - if depressing - thought experiment.

Wendy Davis' Texas

The Hairpin has an interesting article from a Texan woman on her experience with the Wendy Davis filibuster. It's a fascinating read, and a great reminder that while most Texas politicians are the worst (Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, Ron Paul, Pete Sessions, etc), some politicians and Texans are super awesome people trying to preserve our rights as women and move our state forward progressively.

Washington Metro's Super New, Super Sexist New Ads

Shout out to my friend Shira for writing a great Happy Place article about the horribly sexist new Washington Metro ads claiming that, basically, "Women Be Shopping!" Give it a read!

Albuquerque Preserves Women's Right to Choose

Voters in Albuquerque, New Mexico reaffirmed women's right to choose, striking down a provision that would have limited women's right to have an abortion after twenty weeks. Support for such measures (which legislators have passed in over a dozen states - including Texas) is based on medical misinformation and callous disregard for women's lives, as well as their - often times very much wanted - fetus' lives. Way to go, New Mexico voters, for not buying into the hype and understanding that one in three women have an abortion for a variety of reasons - all legitimate, and all their choices to make.

International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women

Today is the International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women. You can read more about it here and here. Important stuff.

Disenfranchisement Gets Real

Now that Texas' voter ID has gone into effect, we're already seeing a microcosm of the disenfranchisement of women, minorities, and poor voters it's causing. It's truly a disgrace that Texas Republicans devalue the lives of so many people in so many ways: from restricting women's control over their own bodies to believing that just because someone is poor or Black, he or she doesn't deserve to have his or her voice heard in this republic. Clearly, they understand that the only way to hold onto power is to strip it from everyone else. It's a sad, desperate move, that I hope will be remedied. The question is, will it be remedied soon enough to avoid catastrophic consequences?

Choice: Texas, a Very Serious Game

There's an interesting campaign on IndieGoGo to help develop an interactive, online game designed to show how difficult it is for women in Texas to gain access to reproductive healthcare and abortions, especially after the controversial passage of the omnibus abortion bill earlier this summer. It's an interesting concept, and could be a good way to get more people to understand the difficulties women face when trying to gain access to reproductive services, as well as the devastating effects these new state laws can have against the right to choose.

Does This Explain Why I'm a Failure, but my Relationship is Great?

A study out of UVA suggests that straight men feel worse when their partners succeed, even when they're not in direct competition with them. I guess it's true that I feel much better knowing the person writing this article didn't succeed in giving the study the enormous grain of salt it deserves. It was done on 32 college-aged couples. First of all, 32 is way to small of a sample size to make such a wide-ranging conclusion. Second of all, college-aged guys are idiots. They probably would feel bad if they themselves scored in the top 12% of a test because then they might be a nerd. I know the article tries to back it up with the two studies it cites in the bottom, but a) the Netherlands? Really? and b) Does anyone seriously trust an online study? Come on.
