Tiny Disney Waistlines are More than a Tiny Bit Scary

A Buzzfeed artist adjusted the waistlines of some Disney princesses to be more realistic.

If you look at the photos on the right first, you'll think "those aren't such tiny waists" then you look at the photos on the left and realize, "Oh my God, those princesses have the rib cage of a hummingbird!" It really makes you feel like the original Disney ones are the ones that have been Photoshopped.

An excellent case of showing not telling disproportionate body standards. See them all on Buzzfeed.

You Ain't Cool Unless You Support Planned Parenthood*

Lena Dunham's book tour t-shirt says, "Lena [Heart] Planned Parenthood." And now tons of celebs are wearing them! It's a great way to raise awareness for Planned Parenthood (and Lena's book). Planned Parenthood is also going to be doing nine events in coordination with the book tour throughout October. You can check out them all the celeb photos at HuffPo.

*Yes that was a Billy Madison reference for some terrible reason.

Wild Pink Leopard and Zebra Print Bachelorette Nails!

One of my best friends is getting married in two weeks, so for her bachelorette nails, I decided to go as stereotypical as possible: neon pink with black leopard spots and zebra stripes. Full-on bridal, "girl power" insanity. Fortunately, my friend is not at all like this. We ended up doing a "Murder Mystery at the MET" Scavenger hunt as our main activity so... yeah, not quite a wild, animal print bunch, which is why I thought it'd be so fun(ny). What do you think?

"Women Against Feminism" parody Twitter is super funny/sad

"Women Against Feminism" is the exception that proves the rule of feminism gaining more mainstream acceptance. So a "Women Against Feminism" parody twitter seems very appropriate. It's super funny and you should check it out! @NoToFeminism

Ask a Grown Man: Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert did a "Ask a Grown" segment for Rookie Magazine. In it, he gives advice on talking to your dad about sex, how to let boys know you don't like misogynistic jokes, and how to tell if someone likes you (and therefore, in turn, how to let someone know you like them). Check it out:

For reals - we could all stand to be a little less selfish and bring a little more cookies.

Shonda Rhimes #ThankGodItsThursday

Hey! It IS Thursday! Must be why ABC dropped this gem on us:

Can we handle a three-hour block of every-act-break-the-world-blows-up-insanity? Who knows! But we're going to give it a shot! I love that Shonda is owning this. I love that her leads are right there with her. I love that I will get to see Viola Davis chew the shit out of the scenery on my TV every week. That is brilliant. It's so weird. I used to love Thursdays for comedy, but now I'm getting pumped to love Thursdays for drama. So. Much. Drama.

Take me to Shondaland.

Notorious RBG Owns her Notoriety

Ruth Bader Ginsburg knows we adoringly refer to her as Notorious RBG and loves it. She said as much in an interview with Katie Couric for Yahoo News. If you aren't familiar with the meme, check out the Notorious RBG Tumblr and see why we love this boss Supreme Court Justice.

Ladies Can Write Marvel Movies, Too!?!

Apparently so! The co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy opening this week is Nicole Perlman. Considering this is her first produced movie, her career is starting off on a pretty high note. The enormous amount of praise the movie's been getting before its release couldn't hurt, either. Let's hope that a) the movie lives up to the hype and b) Marvel takes the hint and continues to invest in this and other writers who happen to be women. Considering that women make up a majority of moviegoers these days, I'd say it's a smart investment. You can read an interview with Nicole at THR.

Comic Con: Women Who Kick Ass Panel

Well, this is refreshing. How exciting that Comic Con had another "Women Who Kick Ass" panel! EW, which hosted the panel, understandably has a great write-up on it, which included my super favorite Nicole Beharie from Sleepy Hollow, Natalie Dormer and Maisie Williams represented the Game of Thrones ladies (I suppose Gwendoline Christie and Diana Rigg were busy!), and Tatiana Maslany represented her insane string of characters from Orphan Black. That's pretty much the only panel I wish I could have seen in person, if only to be there for comments like these:
Dormer should always be the one to explain Game of Thrones to new fans: “Game of Thrones shows you all the different ways you can wield power: Whether it’s psychological, physical, sexual, dragons,” Dormer said. “I think we’d all go for the dragons if we were given the choice. But that’s the secret of the writing, that’s why it’s such a compelling show—because it shows how different people are given different weapons, physically and metaphorically, and how they use them.”
You can read more at EW! It sounds like it really did kick ass.

In other news, Texas is down 20 abortion clinics

Just one year after Texas passed one of the harshest reproductive rights restrictions in the country, half of Texas' 40 abortion clinics have closed. By next year, the entire state will be down to six. This is a tragedy, and another reason why we must elect Wendy Davis and other pro-choice candidates to stand up for women's rights.

Besides, if conservatives really wanted to help and protect future generations, they'd embrace the Medicaid expansion. Since they refuse to do that, I can't take the idea that they care about anyone but themselves seriously.

Why Don't Girls Like Science? Spoiler Alert: They Do!

I'm no fan of commercials most of the time, but this is one where you can totally ignore the product and just absorb the message:

What we say and how we treat women matters in both the obvious and not-so-obvious ways. We're losing out as a world by not having more women involved in science and engineering. It's time we changed that.

"Broad City' Ladies are Feminists, Obvs

File this under "Things That are Self-Evident" - Abbie Jacobson and Ilana Glazer (plus the whole Broad City staff) are totally feminists because, "feminist is gender equality." Yep!

Here's the rest of the interview for PopSugar:

Also, I saw them at their DCM show this weekend and it was totally baller. Also, obvs.

Your Annual Depressing Media Diversity Stats

Here. Blarg.

Comedy Central's New Lineup Includes Two Lady-Led Shows

With the success of Inside Amy Schumer  and Broad City, Comedy Central seems to have finally found the light on women-centric comedies - they are funny and people watch them - who knew!? They do, now.

They've ordered two new series, Another Period and Idiotsitter presumably to air sometime later this year (CC's not always on the same TV schedule, so I'm not going to make any assumptions). Another Period stars the super funny Natasha Leggero (Comedy Central Roasts) and Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel and Oates) as early 20th century celebrity-wannabes. Idiotsitter stars 22 Jump Street breakout Jillian Bell and Charlotte Newhouse as a bratty rich girl on house arrest and her straight and narrow babysitter.

I'm sure excited for both series - they sound really fun and silly!

Furious Feminist

My friend Maddie (of Amy Poehler book cover "via" from the last post fame) wrote a really great piece on #YesAllWomen at Jezebel that I forgot to direct you all to last month, so I'm telling you to read it now. I actually think, if anything, it's better to read it now if only to remind ourselves how quickly the media cools off after these kinds of horrible events. It sucks when all your righteous anger dissipates instead of actually being resolved. Keep up the great work and keep fighting the good fight, Maddie!

Let's Cleanse with a Ridic Period Ad

An epic follow-up to the delightful Camp Gyno, Moon Party is the kind of period ad I am totally fine with watching:

I'm sorry, but that isn't embarrassing - that's a killer party. I can't be the only one who wants to know what's in that uterus piñata.

Black Women Run Hollywood

Maybe this is the reason? It would explain a lot in a way less depressing way:

Not quite buying it. I'm sorry, but Bey and Oprah do not get kicked out of secret societies. They leave to form better secret societies of their own.

Speaking of representation of women in the media:

Amy Schumer's Military Rape Sketch

One of my favorite sketches from this season's Inside Amy Schumer has been this one which, in a super weird and wonderful way, tackles rape in the military:

It's so amazing to me that she was able to pull off this sketch. It is spot on. There's some background on the sketch in this GQ profile on her. Also in case you missed it, check out Amy's speech on confidence at the Gloria Awards and Gala.

#YesAllWomen

ICYMI: This New Yorker article does a good job of distilling the recent, explosive #YesAllWomen hashtag. Other great articles on it at Slate, TIME, and WaPo. I'm sure I'm missing some, too, so please feel free to reply with your favorite articles or tweets.

I'm on vacation right now, and I sometimes miss the big news stories while I'm away. I'm glad I didn't miss this one. I won't go into a long discussion or a series of stories on this subject, but to address the utter banal truth of #YesAllWomen, here's a quick anecdote:

There are two ways to walk the two blocks home from the subway after work: the shorter way and the populated way. For the first several months we lived in our new apartment, he would lead us the shorter way and I would lead us the populated way. Finally, I told him, "I don't want to go that way anymore at night." "But this way is so crowded." "Yes, which means it's so safe." He had never thought of it that way. Here was an open, perceptive, feminist man who completely missed that #YesAllWomen have to choose between safety and convenience.

Also, when to and not to wear my headphones while walking alone is a nightly battle.
