Thank you, Disney. I can't get over how fantastic this is.
SO lovely.

Fun Theories about Disney's New Princess
Disney's next princess is Moana, a Pacific Islander woman with a quest and killer navigational skills to boot. Already, pre-fans are gearing up to be excited about it. Love the prethusiasm, gang!

'Not Another Sundance' Movie Parody
Is it ok that this REALLY makes me want to go to Sundance?
I think there must be something wrong with me. Cue artsy-borderline-emo music!

GOP Can't Stop Demonizing Women
TPM has a nice round-up of the latest shenanigans the GOP is throwing out there in the (as much as they deny it, very much still existing) "war on women." I just hope I don't get drafted.
Shonda Rhimes, Kinda Pissed there Needs to be an Award for the Award She Just Won
I love Shonda Rhime's work and (at least in print) personality. She seems like a great person to have on your team. That's why I loved that not only did she win a Diversity Award from the DGA, she also said this, "“When I heard I was getting a Diversity Award, I was really, truly, profoundly honored ... but I was also a little pissed off.... So was Betsy. So over many, many, many bottles of wine we discussed this.” “We’re a little pissed off because there still needs to be an award. Like, there’s such a lack of people hiring women and minorities that when someone does it on a regular basis, they are given an award.”
How to Photograph a Cover for Powerful Women
The basic gist of photographing women for a news cover - not as heels plunging into a man's esophagus or as horrifying planetoids. A surprisingly large amount of people do not know this. Examples of good stuff here.
Puppy Bowl!!!
Obviously, everyone loves the Puppy Bowl, but who knew the First Lady was into it enough to lead a puppy bowl training camp with Bo and Sunny? Wish I could have been there!
A Foreshadowing of Ice and Thrones
HBO knows we can't start gearing up for Season 4 of Game of Thrones early enough (see: trailer, photos), so they're going to release a 15-minute "foreshadowing" featurette on Feb. 9th with clips and cast member interviews.
Again, now that I can't be spoilered, I'm all about checking out the previews. Looking good so far!

I Will Watch Anything by Rob Thomas, even a Zombie Procedural
I'm no fan of zombies. At least outside of zombie George Washington and zombie Romeo. However, Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas' new project over at CW based on an existing comic book, iZombie, about a zombie woman who maintains her humanity by eating murdered people's brains and subsequently discovering who committed those murders sounds like a zombified Pushing Daisies that I could really get into. Definitely not a sentence I ever saw myself writing, but I'm fine with it!
Also, I'd love to write for that show. I could add crazy amounts of zombie snark and zombie-procedural puns. "I'll see you in Hell... when I go back." "Sounds like he got a case of the munchies. The brain munchies." "Sounds like she really got... in his head. Zombies."

Gorgeous Photos of Black Actresses in Iconic Hollywood Roles
A super cool photography exhibit by two Dakar-based photographers casts black actresses in classic (and classically white) Hollywood roles. You can see them all here. I particularly love their Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Elizabeth Banks Directing 'Pitch Perfect' Sequel!
SO excited for this! Elizabeth Banks will direct the sequel to Pitch Perfect, and it's going to come out in May 2015. This means:
A) We're getting a Pitch Perfect sequel.
B) It's going to be out NEXT YEAR.
C) Super funny person Elizabeth Banks is going to hit it out of the park!
I cannot wait. I mean, I can and will, but I'm still super aca-pumped!
Also, is anyone else a little horrified that 2015 is next year? Didn't it seem kind of like one of those future dates like 2121 that you don't actually think will ever occur?

Too cute! Also, a little horrifying (those eyes - so focused, so enormous, so crazy!).

What if the Media Treated Male Politicians like Female Politicians?
Super amazing candidate for TX governor Wendy Davis is getting a lot of BS from the right and the media in general about her mothering skills. It's completely unfair and a waste of the voters' time.
It's also, sadly, just another example of the media and the right treating female politicians horribly compared to male politicians. To sum it up, blogger Avital Norman Nathman wrote a piece for the Frisky (re-posted by HuffPo) positing what it would be like for men to be treated the way women do in politics. It's a solid - if depressing - thought experiment.

Amy Poehler: Feminist and All Around Awesome Lady
Elle's got a great, brief interview with Amy Poehler on feminism, female friendships, Parks and Rec, improv and all kinds of goodness. I want her to produce MY super funny Comedy Central show!! We could talk about feminism and comedy and waffles all day long.
My favorite quote (and a strong message to all those women aspiring to have power, especially creative power and especially in entertainment) is, "You need to believe that you deserve to be in the room once you get there." Also good to know this is true, "I don’t think creativity has to come from a place of dysfunction. It can come from nice people with good parents."
Plus, she's writing a book! Can't wait to read it!
Go, Amy!

"Not Having Kids," A Drug Ad I Can Get Behind
"Not Having Kids" could be the hot new wonder drug. True, it has some side effects, but also a lot of perks.

Like Isaac Asimov and 'Back to the Future' Before Them, 'The Simpsons' Predicts the Future
For example, in 2005, they foresaw a Broncos-Seattle Super Bowl match-up! They've got Broncos up 19 to 14, but we'll see on Sunday. And just for funskies, Buzzfeed has 21 other times The Simpsons got the future right on the face-flute.
GoT is Coming
Ok, fine, Game of Thrones won't be here until April, but at least we've got some sweet photos in the meantime. And finally I can't be spoilered (at least 30% of the way through book five!)!
OMG 'Broad City'
I watched the first episode of Comedy Central's new show (produced by Amy F*ing Poehler) Broad City and I was like, "This could be funny. I see potential." But this week's episode blew the pilot out of the water. There are several legitimate lol moments (that freaked out my husband who was trying to fall asleep).
The scene in the fake Staples. I have been there.
That's all I'm saying.
Watch it.

Fox's "Cosmos" Trailer
Seth MacFarlane may have produced something I'll actually like* in this new series - based on the old Carl Sagan series - Cosmos for FOX.
At the very least, we'll get some stellar (get it!?!) visuals and smooth jazz voiceover by Neil deGrasse Tyson. That's enough for me.
*Since Family Guy was reborn

ABC Orders a Pilot for Asian American Sitcom, "Fresh Off the Boat"!
It would be super cool to have a non-white network family comedy in the mix sometime this century (it's sad to have to say that, isn't it?), and Fresh Off the Boat, based on a memoir by chef Eddie Huang, just might be it. ABC has ordered the pilot, and Nahnatchka Khan, of Don't Trust the B, is writing and executive producing. I really enjoyed Don't Trust the B, and the fact that it's based off of a popular memoir sounds like a good mix. Of course, networks order 50+ pilots for 10 or so slots every year so no guarantees, but it's nice to dream, isn't it?
Michelle Obama Watches 'Scandal'
It's true!
I wonder if Michelle Obama ever wishes she could be Olivia Pope* or just hire Olivia Pope to fix Congress?
Now if only I could convince her to come over and binge watch them with me.
*With the take-no-shit attitude and gorgeous outfits**, without the self-destructive love affairs, of course.
**That being said, Ms. Obama also wears gorgeous outfits quite a lot, as well.

Fantastic Super Bowl Ad
Although it won't be playing during the Super Bowl itself, this ad from the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is super relevant to "the big game"
I figured out about halfway through the ad why they were only using one word at a time. It's a really smart, moving way to prove how destructive and reductive a term like "redskin" can be, in general usage and especially for the name of a football team.
I'm not sure even Budweiser's "horse and dog are friends" ad can beat that.

Renegade Cut: Disney Gender Roles
Below is an interesting discussion on Disney's gender roles through the years, both male and female:
It's not saying anything entirely new, and I wish they had included Frozen, but I still think it's always good to talk about this kind of stuff, and a good discussion-starter.

Lucky number 7!!! I honestly believed (and had come to terms) with the fact that this would be the last season of Parks and Recreation, but I was wrong! Blessedly wrong! You can read more here.

Game of Thrones Season 4 Trailer is Here!!
Hooray!! It's weird watching this trailer, since now that I've read the books, I know exactly what's happening. I both like/don't like it (the fact that I know, not the trailer, which looks great!), but I also am excited to see all the things the showrunners and writers change. So far, the show has done a fantastic job, and this trailer seems like we're going to see more incredible moments ahead!
Can't wait until April! Partially for this and partially because then it might be warm again...

5th Kidneyversary Nails!
January 8th marked my fifth Kidneyversary (anniversary of my kidney transplant). Still going strong!
I marked the occasion with some orange kidney nails (orange as a shout-out to NKF!).
What do you think?

Veronica Mars Movie Trailer is Officially Here!!!
The trailer for the Veronica Mars movie is HERE!! SUPER BADASS SQUEAL OF DELIGHT! Sorry I can't embed it, but you can see it at E!
Oh man. It looks so good. Did you see how much Max Greenfield they put in there? Delightful. Did you catch a cameo by Kristen Bell's hubby Dax Shepherd (I thought I did but I've only watched it once so I could be wrong)? Did you see all the LoVe they put in? I definitely did.
Obviously, I do hope that Veronica's character has grown and matured and doesn't devolve or regress emotionally by the end of the film (she really starts off in a high place, so there may be some of that, but maybe it will lead to higher and better emotional growth by the end?), but it also looks like there's going to be some awesome detectivery going on. I hope we see more of Wallace and Mac. What have they been up to?
So many questions. And, come March, so many answers!
