More Chatroulette Artists Having Fun

This time, in painting form! Enjoy!

I Hope That Dog's Ok!

I want to live in Salisbury, where the biggest news item is that a dog injured its nose, and the most important historical event that happened there was that a steak was named after it.

Thank you to Neatorama for pointing me in the direction of my new home.

Twaggies: This Site is Hilarious

Twaggies is It's totally weird and useless, but also hilarious. This could be because as much as I'm not against Tweeting, I do not have the energy to get into it. My love affair with Google Reader is far too complicated to add another character, much less 140. So I go to the Twaggies, and so can you, for your daily dose of really weird Tweet-induced artwork. Now you can go ahead and pretend like you're involved with the Internets. Enjoy!

Happy Friday! (Celebrate with Puppies!)

It's been a rough week for everyone. Whether it's work, life, or that giant oil spill that's five times worse than we ever imagined, we deserve a break.

Here you go, Readers. I give to you, via The Daily Puppy, the happiest puppy on Earth.

Nuclear Fusion - Good Idea? Or Gooder Idea?

This plan for a nuclear-based energy the size and scope of a "mini-star" right here on Earth (!) sounds exactly like the plot of Spider Man 2 (not Austin Powers, like the CNN article suggests. Get with the times, CNN! Austin Powers is so 1997). Except this time Spider Man won't be here to save us when the "Sun on Earth" turns the lead scientist into a crazy octo-psychopath.

I Have a Sneaking Suspicion that this is Not a Joke

I know that conservatives aren't funny when they "joke" about politics. It's just a fact that we all have to deal with in our lives. But how can Funny Conservatives, AKA "Narf Biscuits" not be a secretly progressive site caricaturing conservative humor? It just has to be fake - if it's not there is very little hope for humanity in this world.

With articles like, "Blonde is the New Green," and "Thoughts on the Daily News" like this:

The major news outlets have assured us that Arizona immigration protests are "mostly peaceful." I'm relieved that we can ignore the videos of rocks being thrown, people being arrested, police being hit in the head with bottles, people making gunfire hand-motions at officers, people yelling, running, backing down the riot police. It's all just Fox News camera tricks where they shake the camera to make it look worse. These are peaceful protests compared to the evil Tea Party protests where allegedly one person claimed to have heard the n-word spoken 15 times in just 2 seconds, and people were waving their flags in the air giving an ominous dagger and sword-like appearance. Old ladies sitting in some kind of intimidating metal, wheeled devices. Seemingly ready to attack at any moment. Attack chihuahuas on leashes, ready to be released on anyone with opposing views. The police can rest for now. At least until the next Tea Party rally. - Narf Biscuits
and cartoons like this:

(Seriously? Obama and Michelle as African cannibals? And these guys are not racists? What is Obama even wearing? A washboard? So is he a hillbilly Southern African cannibal? I bet it took them a while to come up with that great pun about "eating their own" and "coming to the table." That's almost, ALMOST as funny as a Mallard Fillmore comic.)

How can they take themselves seriously as funny? It's the epitome of all ironies. I keep trying to put myself in a Republican's shoes and trying to see if this is funny or not and it just isn't. Those aren't jokes. It's like they watched The Daily Show once and said, "I get that. I can do better than that," and then failed. Miserably.

Anyway, I hope they don't find out about this post because I'm sure they have some legal beagles who will destroy me. But since they probably don't have a large readership anyway, I'm just going to hope that this entertains you all.

...

Seriously!? Obama as an African cannibal!? Come on!

Sometimes Jerks Annoy Me

This is one of those times. I can't believe the governor's veto was overridden, proving that the vast majority of Oklahoma's legislature believe that women are not capable of making rational decisions about their own bodies.

If I cursed on this blog, I'd say a big [Insert Appropriate Curse] to those jerks. Since I do not, I strongly suggest that any of you readers who live in Oklahoma call up your state senators and representatives and tell them off for women everywhere. Ok, I'm pretty sure none of my readers live in Oklahoma, so just pretend you do and call them up anyway. Cool?

Big thanks to the Pancake Lady for alerting me to this disturbing article.

Wind Power on Cape Cod Blows Past a Major Hurdle!

Good news for offshore wind power! It passed a major regulatory hurdle, courtesy of Interior Secretary Ken Salazaar and a nine-year (nine years!) review.

Of course, not everyone's for this. Environmentalists and proponents of "pleasing views" alike* this is a very bad idea. My favorite ironic line comes from Audra Parker, president and chief executive of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound: “We will not stand by and allow our treasured public lands to be marred forever by a corporate giveaway to private industrial energy developers."

I wonder if Audra has electricity in her house right now?

If so, I wonder if she said the same thing about strip mining, mountaintop removal mining, coal mining, dirty coal plants, natural gas plants, oil mining, and nuclear power. Because - spoiler alert - wind power does a lot less damage than any of those options, and if Nantucket does not adopt a more sustainable energy source, then they're going to be staring into the eyes of a beast much scarier than wind, and much more devastating to their views.

If not, then good for Audra for going completely green and lightless. She's clearly a far better person than me.

*Here I am not referring to the Wampanoag tribe, which has the most reasonable argument of anyone against offshore wind. However, as the article states, the color, location, and orientation of the turbines can solve their problems with the project.

Lady Writer Booming Because of Twitter - Good News?

I don't know whether to be super pissed off or super happy about this. Fortunately, Jill Soloway agrees with me. Unfortunately, they're both much more successful than I am, which clearly leaves me even less successful than I previously thought I was.

Does this mean I should quit trying to write professionally and just start tweeting so I can then write professionally? Or do I continue on the vague path I'm on and then also retry this whole Twitter thing?

Personally, I think that my over 140 character blog posts should count as like a million tweets, so I should already be famous.

On a different note, do you ever hear weird noises that aren't connected to anything? Because I think I just heard a very tiny ant's alarm going off near my computer. I'm just sayin'.

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

I hope you all take some time out of your day to help out in some small way, whether turning off your lights when you're not in the room or unplugging your electronics at night when you're done with them. This morning I signed the Earth Day 2010 Climate Declaration. It took me a whopping 30 seconds and made me feel happy for the rest of the day!

For some extra green boosting power, check out this Comedy Central Insider blog post with some more really super duper easy things you can do to help out today and beyond!

I would make an addendum to their "Go Vegetarian" suggestion because if you're like me, you love meat, and you would not want to give it up forever. But try eating meat only once or twice a week instead of every day. It's a great way to cut down on your carbon count and it'll make you healthier overall (especially if your cholesterol count is just as important as your carbon one)!

UPDATE: Another series of great, though more drastic tips over at HowStuffWorks. I particularly like the one about giving up seafood, since I gave it up when I was 8!

Clover in a Field

When I was in 7th grade, I tried to convince my friend Mio to adopt a pot-bellied pig (her family was allergic to dogs) and name it Clover.

Now, I want to steal this Clover for myself. Thank you, as always, to the Daily Puppy for showing me the Goldendoodle of my dreams!

Four Chords to Be a Star!

That's all it takes! If I had known then what I know now, I could be a hit musical sensation! Oh well, at least after watching this I feel like I've listened to a really awesome Greatest Hits album. I also like how some of these songs are Australia specific and I totally didn't get them, but still had a blast listening to them!

Enjoy!

Oh, and "Africa" by Toto is one of my favorite songs of all time for almost no reason besides that it's ridiculous and fun to sing at karaoke, especially when no one else has heard of it.

For more info on these magical four chords, check out this How Stuff Works blog post!

Happy Two Year Annivesary!

To me and my boyfriend. We did it! Hugs all around!

Birthday Post!

(Ok, so I know it's not my birthday, but this is what I wanted to post yesterday before I got caught up in the TOTALLY AWESOMELY WONDERFUL birthday I had!)

While watching this, I did feel very small and insignificant. I felt that we must protect our world and that my problems and successes are only a minuscule portion of this much larger planet of ours.

Then I remembered, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! And I had a lot of fun.

Music Brightens My Day

And it can brighten yours, too! Just listen to this amazing hang drum (who knew what that was anyway? Not me!) duo kick musical ass and help me go to sleep after a long day.

I hope this helps you all have sweet dreams tonight, readers! Or at least get in a good nap at work tomorrow.

PS. It's my birthday tomorrow! It's never too early (or too late) to start wishing me a happy 23rd!

When You Give an Auction an Internship...

Give Barnard $500, they'll give you a 2-month unpaid internship in a failing industry at one of said industry's worst publications!

lizvarner:

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for raising as much funding as possible for my wonderful alma mater, and a lot of the items up for bid on their online auction are legitimately very cool (albeit too expensive for me to even pretend to consider purchasing). But really? Paying at least $500 for an internship? An unpaid internship? An unpaid internship in magazine publishing?

Are you even allowed to put a purchased internship experience on your resume? If you are, you shouldn’t be. Actually, after further thought, maybe you should be required to put “paid to participate in unpaid internship” on a resume, because really sometimes the ‘interests’ section of a CV isn’t quite enough to weed out the crazies.

Internette:

Love that the “estimated value” is $1500. Estimated value TO THE MAGAZINE of HAVING AN INTERN, maybe. Seriously, what good and ethical people can possibly think to themselves, “Why, yes, an internship at the world-renowned magazine SHAPE? That is easily worth one and one half grand. That is what most people would want to pay for it, in my estimation.”

I think my favorite part is that whoever "wins" this auction prize still has to be enrolled in a college and "pay their own expenses." This means that not only will they pay $500, but actually somewhere between $800-$3800 to cover the costs of being enrolled in a college, finding a place to live, and eating food for the two months that you will have that internship. Plus, what internship ever lasts just two months? All of mine were at least three months if not five.

Although, let's be honest here, you get to choose your department! "Fitness, health, nutrition, beauty, fashion, or even website!" Can't I do them all?!

Conan at TBS - Very Funny?

In a rare bit of TV media-related commentary, I just felt like I had to comment on Conan O'Brien's move to host a Late Night show on TBS this fall.

First of all, did any of you call this? It was quite a shock to me. While I was concerned with where Conan would fit in the FOX lineup, I never guessed he'd move to TBS. I'm not a huge fan of TBS's original programming, though it does add some much-needed diversity to the TV comedy lineup. I'm concerned about him competing with other 11 PM EST comedies, even with cable's generally low ratings standards.

But who knows! I could be wrong, and I certainly wish him the best!

What do you guys think? Will you watch Conan on his new time slot? Do you have basic cable (which I do not)? Do you think TBS will start airing their shows on Hulu? Do you even care?

UPDATE: This Daily Beast article offers a lot more insight, and definitely makes the case that this was the best possible move for Conan.

Thank You!

Thanks everyone for reading my blog post at the3six5!

It's already received 1284 views and counting! Plus, it's gotten 2 comments and both are very nice and friendly (thanks, Kyle! I can't wait to go to Blue Marble when it reaches 90 degrees again!).

This post meant a lot to me (it's the first time I've been blog published on a blog that wasn't my own!) and I really appreciate all the support.

Hugs!

Oh, and, for your efforts, here's an adorable puppy in a bandanna.

Why I Don't Miss College

While most of my "Class Notes: Alumni Updates!" email was filled with people I don't know doing cool things like working in Papua New Guinea to promote conservation or graduating from Harvard with a Masters in Education, there was also this guy:

"[Anonymous Jerk Face] has moved back to Bogota, Colombia. He is working as a business analyst for a Dutch chain of supermarkets with a presence in ten different Colombian cities. He finds the work to be both interesting and varied. As a former member of the Columbia golf team, Philippe likes to play a round of golf as often as possible to maintain his level."

The key words here are: business analyst, Dutch chain of supermarkets, interesting and varied, golf team, round of golf, and - most of all - maintain his level.

Seriously, who goes to Bogota to be a tool? Although, admittedly, you can probably be a tool for so much cheaper there than in New York. Plus, much more easily accessible cocaine.

Voice in the Vent Update!

I now think that the Voice in the Vent was watching this last night.

Still just as stereotypical. Also, awesome!

PS. For all you New Yorkers...

... It hasn't been this hot this early here since 1929 (and that record was only 89 degrees. Today it was 90!)

Of course, I spent the day (half of it outside) wearing a long-sleeved shirt with a short-sleeved shirt over it. I am the baddest of badasses.

What I Could Have Done While in the Hospital

This is both sad, funny, and inspiring. My question is - how did he get a green screen into his hospital room? Also, I bet he's written 12 screenplays by now. Seriously.

Anyway, in some small way, I relate to this guy (and love his accent, duh!), but I definitely fully respect him. Get better soon, Fully [Soon-to-be-Well?] Rapper!

Voice in the Vent

"I Will Always Love You" is blasting in the VITV's room. At first I thought, "Come on, now, could you get any more stereotypical?"

Then I realized American Idol is on tonight.

The answer, of course, is no.

A Juxtaposition I Just Don't Get

Have anyone else noticed how detailed the animation in "South Park" has gotten over the years?

Seriously, look at the shading on the pillow and sheets here. That's very well-executed! Even how the chair off to the side is cardboard style but feels very three-dimensional is almost impressive. At the same time, the characters' faces look nearly the same as they did when "South Park" first aired. What a weird juxtaposition!

I understand that computer animation has led to vast advances in how great we can make everything look, but I guess I just don't understand why Trey Parker and Matt Stone would really care (unlike all of the explosions and stuff, which I can understand a couple of guys like that wanting to make them look really over-the-top and nuts).

We'll probably never know, but it still weirds me out.

What do you guys think?

No Wonder I'm Slightly Crazy

I was just reading the Daily Beast's 50 Most Stressful Colleges. I just started browsing through their slideshow, looking for my college, and I thought, "Well, this is going to take forever. I might as well click 'See All'." Nevermind, my college is 2nd.

The sad thing is that it doesn't surprise me at all.

Happy Easter, Voice in the Vent!

"It's Easter, today, Hallelujah!" sung by yours truly, the Voice in the Vent.

Happy Easter, Readers!

PS. Here is some Easter Lore courtesy of Snopes.com, enjoy!

Hot Food Revolution Pockets

I just love the irony of watching "Hot Pocket Side Shot Cheeseburger" commercials in the middle of "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution." Really tugs at the heartstrings.

Muppets Rock It Again: Bunny Style (?)

Just in time for Easter! An appropriately costumed Muppet Monster sings while munching on delicious singing buddies.

A Place to Love Dogs' Idea of April Fools'

Clearly, this is an otter pup, not a puppy pup, but it's still adorable! Also, Shira, this is for you.
